Police Message

‘Merry Christmas one and all from your friendly neighbourhood team!

I just wanted to let you all know that you should be seeing more of the team between now and mid-January, as we step up anti-crime patrols focusing on the retail and entertainment areas of the beat.

This is not in a response to an increase in crime as in fact crime remains low compared to most areas of the city and is still falling further. Naturally there will still be incidents and I am asking all of you to be extra vigilant between now and Christmas.

Almost all vehicle crimes in the Quarter are ‘smash and grab’ style offences against cars where owners have left items on display.

In one offence the victim even left a suitcase on the back seat and the car unlocked! Similarly almost all shop theft offences in the Quarter are due to shop staff leaving items on counters with ‘customers’ and then turning their backs.

I am glad to say that there has not been a domestic burglary in the quarter for over three months, though as the nights draw in we need to ensure that we leave lights on when we go out. We all need to be careful, but remember at the same time that these incidents are mercifully rare.

Whilst there are still beggars in the quarter, reports have fallen sharply. We have helped to house three homeless beggars recently and I ask again that all generous contributions you wish to make go to our own Big Issue sellers or to registered charities and not to these individuals.

I know almost all of them and I can assure you that the vast majority are not homeless. We work closely to assist those who ask for help and prosecute those who refuse such aid. If you see any such individuals please let us know, as I would love it if all were housed or helped by the New Year.

Please do enjoy the festive season and the New Year, remembering that crime is low and that together we can keep it that way!’

Cheers
